Who Is Stephen Willeford? Texas Man Pursued Church Shooter With Own Gun
BY JULIANA ROSE PIGNATARO
11/06/17

A Texas man named Stephen Willeford was identified by authorities as one of the heroes of Sunday’s mass shooting at a church in Sutherland Springs. Willeford, 55, apparently confronted gunman Devin Kelley with his own rifle and “engaged the suspect,” Texas Department of Public Safety Regional Director Freeman Martin told the Daily Mail.

Willeford confronted the suspect as he was leaving the First Baptist Church, where he had opened fire, killing 26 people. Willeford caused Kelley to drop his rifle, a Ruger AR assault-type gun, Martin said. It was then that another resident, Johnnie Langendorff, pulled up to the scene.

“I pulled up to the intersection where the shooting happened,” Langendorff told KSAT. “I saw two men exchanging gunfire, the other being the citizen of the community.”

What type of rifle did Willeford have?

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest it was a bolt action rifle chambered in .270 or .30-06.

This is me making a wild-assed guess based on the location, age of the heroic citizen, time of year, and other factors.

I think Willeford had an AR-15 also.

Good shooting.

My understanding (and I might be wrong) is that most body armor might stop a .223 but most heavier rounds will zip right through. Many hunters in Texas use larger rounds because of the size of their deer and the distances they might be shooting.

A 7mm rem mag or a 300 weatherby mag will go through both sides of most body armor. It is designed to stop most handgun shots. Military grade armor with the plates and all the extras will stop most rifle rounds, but most police grade armor and what is available to most people is not as sturdy.

Based on my guess about the guy, taking into account, his age, area, time of year and all of that.
He had several rifles available, and he grabbed the best 1 for the job at hand.

Apparently Willeford lives across the street and was taking a nap. He heard the gunshots, and saw the gunman.

Willeford grabbed his gun and ran out of his house toward the church barefooted. Likely the shooter dropped his rifle when he was hit, then attempted to flee the scene.

Reports are the wound must have been severe, because the animal phoned his father during the pursuit and said he'd "been shot and didn't think he was going to make it."

The animal was wearing armor with a front plate but no back plate.

I can't help but ask, but was his father complicit in some way, beforehand?

What does this mean? Just because he was barefooted doesn't mean he was permanently afoot.

Edit: You see, people drive cars to work and can live in other places.

Well, "body armor" can mean a whole range of vests/suits for different purposes with different ratings.

With modern armor, you can typically protect against rimfire and centerfire pistol ammo with increasing layers of fiber (mostly Kevlar or competitors) up through level IIIa. At full level III or IV - you're talking plates (ceramic, steel, other material) to protect against rifles and, even then, you only have protection from rifles where the plates are.

All those standards are being revised for 2018, BTW, so this knowledge is good for about 60 days .

Did he tell him why he'd been shot?

I am thinking the same, time for dad to get 26 counts of homicide if true.

Read that the shooter played HS Football, and whenever he made a mistake on the field, his father would go ballistic. Also read he was on antipsychotics in HS. Putting those two elements together smells of dysfunction.
