What would the redundant services be exactly?

And why would more schools be necessary if enrollment doesn't mandate more schools?

And why is another HS needed? Enrollment isn't rising in fact it's either level or declining.

You aren't making any sense.

No

But no one believes students are going to all leave CHS, Parkview and others either.

100K live in SG, there aren't going to be 10K high school age kids.

Err no it's not.

Convenient, yes; not the nicest.

Redundant services:
Creating an entire new mayors office
An entire new school district administration
A new city hall
A new city court

The issue is bussing. St. George backers want local control of their schools. They feel that the two big issues in the school system are:
1. Bad administration by the EBR School Board
2. Badly drawn school districts which force students to be bussed far away from their neighborhoods to attend school.

If they feel they can cure the two with their own school district, then many of the middle class whites (who already leave their mids in public primary schools) may elect to keep their kids in public high schools in the future. I don't trust that this will be the result, but I support their right to decide if it's worth a try.

The St George organizers promised 6 new schools for St George residents if the incorporation and ISD plans passed. That was one of their main arguments for getting a new district.

ETA: I found the Advocate's article on SG's plan for 6 new schools...

Organizers have said they believe they need six additional schools: one high school, two middle schools and three elementary schools.

Let me put things in context, I was responding to this post from the King:

quote:

I believe incorporation of a new city would be a net negative for the parish due to creating an extra bureaucracy and redundant services which would require extra tax money, and under deliver on promises. Whites won't flock to the new schools and the added taxes to build those schools will push more people into AP and LP. I think this issue could be solved much more easily by Baton Rouge annexing the developed areas and building an extra high school out there.

However, what the "Better Together" folks are doing is far more damaging to the city than any incorporation effort ever could be

So I asked this question,
quote:

And why would more schools be necessary if enrollment doesn't mandate more schools?

Why? Because he first stated whites wouldn't flock to the schools, so I was wondering why new schools would be needed.

My question about why would another HS be needed was in response to his statement that they needed to build one in SBR to placate SG with "they" being the EBR Parish System. We both know that's silly because as things now stand enrollment in the EBR Parish School system has nothing to do with BR City Limits. You do not have to live in the city limits to go to an EBR Parish School.

I remember that, and you make a great point. They never fully explained how they would pay for those new schools. We currently pay just over half a cent in sales tax for school construction. That would pay for some of what they need, but I doubt that would be enough. The rest of that penny goes to discipline and teacher pay. Property taxes to the tune of 42 mills also goes to EBR School. They would have that to work with.

But again, your point is well taken and needs to be addressed.

As for the BRAF study, did they account for the half penny? Did they make a fair study? They were on the other side back then, right?

We would have two mayors, but has that hurt Zachary and Central and Baker? Reality is you have a parish president. We don't have a mayor really.

quote:

An entire new school district administration

Yes, but we have one now, there wouldn't be two. And we all know the one know is corrupt and doesn't work.

quote:

A new city hall

Yes, we would.

City Court

No we would only have one, we don't have one now.

And reality is now with Broome putting her stamp on things, people are losing confidence as to whether or not people in SG will be treated fairly. Will we continue to enjoy services as we had in the past, or will she work for here hardcore constituency and not the parish. Will she provide for our basic needs or will she ignore us?

I am beginning to think she will.

And then there is the schools. Scores sunk again despite the promise of a new Supt. They sank while Zachary and Central continue to rise.

I see that and wonder how much better SG could do on its own. We need to be better than 58th out of 70 don't you think?

And believe me, we have the money.
