The Space Force has existed secretly for decades. The creation of the new branch is a way to slowly make public what has been a thing for quite some time.

Op it’s not going to cost hundreds of billions. Most of the new space force will be branches off from the Air Force and they will share facilities with the Air Force.

Lot of wrong info in this thread... I’ve been studying this a bit lately but planning to dive in more soon.
Why are we doing this?
- China and India have shown weaponry that can take out satellites. Most of our daily lives and defense operate off of these satellites so that’s very important to defend them.
- We will be creating a safe environment for public and private investments to flourish in the areas of telecommunications, energy, travel and more. I’ve seen it described that we already have the technology to transmit “WiFi” from space that would require no infrastructure on the ground essentially. There’s billions worth of business opportunities in space and we want to be the dominant player and the first to capitalize will control the market.
Space Force will consolidate current abilities throughout the different branches and expand through working with NASA and private companies.

The biggest thing I see is that Spectrum and SATCON would effectively be under one roof.
I would put the main Department of Space facilities in Houston, Cape Canaveral, Colorado Springs and Federal Way.
