If you're saying social distancing = "not really social distancing" then sure.

Is that not social distancing?

I just...

Do we also need peer reviewed studies to prove that a car powered by an internal combustion engine in it won't run without gas in it?

Were a series of studies done or did we just assume that that was the case?

Edit: Added internal combustion engine because some smart arse is going to start talking about hybrids or electric cars.

I'm pointing out the obvious difference between an exercise on paper and real life. Why waste everybody's time discussing something that can't be done?

Speaking of wasting time, was the OP's point that social distancing is unproven or cannot properly be implemented?

Missouri is right at its normal flu deaths. No change for the end of March until today.
Is that right? Damn. I mean, is it normalized for the huge volatility in the flu numbers from year to year?

But we know social distancing happened based just on looking at the economic wreckage.

If you're going to write laws or edicts which result in the economy crashing as a result, YES. Additionally, putting gas into your car is something that's been done HUNDREDS OF TIMES.

Are you suggesting that the first person to make and test an internal combustion engine should have dispensed with the testing and just sell it after draft 1?

So remember, when you tell people "You have to practice social distancing!" you are either the guy demanding doctors grow a weird mold off some bread, refine it and inject you with the contents to stop an infection, or you're the guy demanding people cut themselves to cure the flu. You have no idea which one you are.

What are you babbling about?

You are over thinking this by a mile. You don’t think staying away from other people, not shaking hands, not hugging decreases your chances of getting sick?

It’s obvious it does, I think your argument should focus on its feasibility in a functioning economy.

Social distancing, as defined by the collective measures implemented and recommended by governments in response to COVID 19, commonly referred to as 'social distancing' or 'lock down' depending on the mood of the agency.

Clearly, I am not talking about a theoretical practice of all of us having no contact with anyone and living on an island somewhere with no contact at all. Of course, that would result in you not getting COVID19.

To assume that is to attempt to twist my very, very simple request for evidence that the currently understood practices have any effect on transmission.

Are you suggesting America effectively practiced social distancing for the last 2-3 months?

How did the virus spread if "With certainty, social distancing prevents the spread of infectious disease"?

You want a peer reviewed study that says if you stay away from me I can’t infect you?

That’s like asking for a peer reviewed study that says the sky is really blue.

It's obvious! Obvious!

It was obvious that heroin cured opium addiction, until it wasn't.

Go back and re-read the OP with the idea in mind that I'm referring to SOCIAL DISTANCING AS RECOMMENDED BY GOVERNMENT AGENCIES. Not a mystical place where you can avoid any and all contact with other humans.

The pandemic is still ongoing. Your statement that there is no peer reviewed evidence yet isn’t a defense of your hypothesis. They may have just not done the study yet.

I personally think it had a small effect along with a lot of other effects like weather. And it’s my personal belief that the single biggest factor was some type of previous immunity wether from other coronaviruses or MMR vaccine etc. that is causing the biggest slow down.

There is a whole industry dedicated to peer reviewing studies on what and why the sky is comprised of different concentrations of gasses. It's called climatology, or climate science. They're very intent on making sure they know everything about the composition of the sky.

Can you explain to me why areas with high population density have fared worse with outbreaks? Why do you think that is?

PEOPLE ARE CLOSER.

It’s hard to spread out in a subway car packed like sardines. That’s a lot different than Topeka, Kansas. It’s essentially a form of distancing. It’s not a bad policy to tell people to avoid close contact. Of all the shite that was recommended or not recommended I’m not sure why you are going after this one.

I'm asking you if you have proof that he tested the engine without anything in it to see if it'd run?

And, did he have his work peer reviewed?

Aren't you asking the same thing? Proof of social distancing testing and the subsequent peer reviewal of such materials?

That's actually exactly what I'm saying. I'm not arguing it does nothing. I'm saying there is no evidence, and people are characterizing it as a sure thing to fight disease spread. There is nothing to suggest it does this.

As I've pointed out, this whole idea of 'social distancing' the way we are doing it now is NEW. This is the first time they've tried it. Authorities (of any type) cannot be allowed to just declare something settled, and run with it. Because they will then get to declare that the next time, and the next, and so on. How many pandemics over the last 40 years have happened with thousands of deaths? Are you ready to go through this every 4-5 years?

I'm suggesting America very much "social distanced" relative to pro-wuflu.

It spread, just less than it would have.
