re: Serious question for white male liberals

I certainly wish our immigration system was more like Australia and New Zealand. Most people here don't, though not really. They'll talk about the skills part and mumble past the part where immigrants make up a whopping 27% of the population, mostly because the skills list includes such arcane and sophisticated trades as carpenter and diesel mechanic.

Conversely in the US "skills-based" is usually a buzzword wielded by people who want massive cuts to legal immigration and therefore their ideal of "skills-based" is "I guess we'll take doctors if we have to."

ETA: overall, my views put me somewhere in the middle rather than solid left. In fact, when I lived in California, most people thought of me as a reasonable conservative. The Voice of Reason, as it were.

I read that and wonder if you realize that you are actually citing an example of a conservative being open minded.

Liberals meet people with conservative ideas and don't have NEARLY the same reaction.

Hell. I once had a female college student find out I was conservative(after she'd gotten to know me and got along with me). When she figured it out, she reacted as if she'd just found out I raped babies. Then, she said, "but you're so nice. I just LOL'ed. Think about how insular you have to be to do THAT!

It isn't an exaggeration to say that I have no fricking idea who comes on FOX when. And, the ONLY time I ever have visited Breitbart is if it has been linked here. But, in typical liberal "open minded" fashion, you can't reconcile that reality with your bubble.

It CAN give you those things. It doesn't automatically give you those things.

Moreover, ideology is a strong thing. I've traveled a LOT and it would be completely accurate for me to tell you that traveling has made me MORE conservative, not less. And yes, I admit that is a result of my own world view. Might I suggest, this occurs when liberals travel too.
