Since Kavanagh is going to be confirmed anyway, the smart move for Jones is to vote to confirm. This will give him more credibility as a "reasonable" Democrat to moderate Bama voters who would be on the fence in the next Alabama Senatorial election. If he voted no on confirmation, that would be handing ammunition to his Republican challenger in the next election.
Strategists in the Democratic party would be giving Jones the same advice. Again, Kavanagh is going to be confirmed anyway, so a no vote from Jones will not help the party in this situation, but would hurt Jones back in Alabama.

Whitehouse is trying to compare a state judge’s recusal because of private financial campaign contributions (I.e individual held “undue influence” over the judge obtaining his seat) with the President appointing Kavanaugh and therefore having “undue influence” over him.
