Why don't you weight in on these subjects? I have feeling you're an expert on all things sciencey.

I did, early on. All you can do is discuss as best you can. But then it gets personnel for some posters.

String Theory isn't an actual theory when it comes to scientific terms. You can argue it has produced some more advanced math, but it's a pseudo-science theory. It's not in the same realm as the theory of evolution, germ theory, atomic theory, et al. It's a hypothesis that tries and bridges the biggest gap in physics, quantum mechanics and relativity. My "theory" is it was coined as a way to avoid a budget cut or something.

Honestly, it shouldn't even have a place in this debate.

I agree with you. I didn't bring it up.

I wasn't responding to you in particular, you just made the last post. I'm new, cut me some slack

You didn't bring it up, you just disparaged those who said essentially the same thing as HeadChange earlier in the thread.

IIRC, you're one of the few people on this entire site that shares the same perspective on string theory that I do

Yeah, I try not to disparage it too much because the scientists responsible for it are obviously smarter than I am, but it just doesn't add up to me.

The problems arise when posters like those in this thread (NC seems to be the most guilty) immediately believe anything they read on a subject due to an appeal to authority fallacy or dismiss objections due to an ad hominem fallacy (such as a poster's or scientist's belief in God).

I suppose you can attempt to defend this ridiculous post, if you'd like:

quote:

You can throw fact after fact, evidence after evidence, reason and logic after more reason and logic in their faces.

It does no good. They close their ears and sing to themselves. Tragic they go through their whole lives like that.

Then they try to debate string theory and cosmological constants. As if they have a clue.

I stand by every word. What part bothers you?

The same folks who poo poo evolution, turn around and use string theory as some sort of defense of god.

What exactly did you think you were doing when you said
quote:

No more, "it's just a theory."

It's possible that the universe is a type of hologram.

Evolution "is just a theory" as used by believers to some how debunk evolution.

If they want to use theory in that regard, we can discuss string theory. Or any many other ideas from the world of theoretical physics. As if they now have a clue about what thy are even talking about.

The arbitrary use of science to defend religion is fascinating to me.

Did I accuse someone specifically?

You're missing something. Where do you stand?
