However, cynically Pretending that Scalise is somehow a white supremacist is dishonest and desperate. And if that is the criteria we are using, then a 30 minute speech in front of one is certainly trumped by years and years of attending a church with the other. When you attend a church, you are supporting the massage. When you give a speech you are being a politician. Had Obama stumbled in one day, heard the hate, and fled, nobody would give a shite. But he ENDORSED Wright's divisive views for YEARS.

It was 1946 when he was a dumb hillbilly kid in a dumb hillbilly state in very different times. Ask yourself why anyone in 2002 would pander to this group.

He will be out and it will be because he showed up at a holocaust denial group.

The race card is moot. Anti Israel connections are not rewarded by conservatives or liberals.

Sorry Steve.

Was it not the republicans that wanted let the payroll tax cut expire, thus increasing the taxes on the middle class? Correct me if I am wrong.

You are partly wrong. It was a temporary tax cut and both sides including Obama were against extending it.

Most Republicans were against extending it because it was costing the SS fund hundreds of billions.

Try again. Find a tax increase that was not proposed by the Democrats. Good luck, you're gonna need it.

"Dumb hillbilly kid"? Byrd was 30 years old, member of the West Virginia house of delegates, and was elected to the state senate just 4 years later.

And Byrd wasn't just "in" the KKK, he was in many leadership positions, including the top officer (Exalted Cyclops) in the local Klan unit.

Revisionist post, much?

So is that what this is really about? Is the House whip not sufficiently pro-Israeli? A quick search of his voting record and speeches shows he has supported Israel quite readily. But hmmm maybe not enough. Maybe some are miffed Cantor isn't where he is anymore.

So a man cannot redeem himself? I see people here singing the praises of an ex drunk, wife beater who became a Christian motivational Speaker(Angelina Jolie is making a movie about him).

Byrd routinely got a 100% from the NAACP & other Black organizations for his voting record in the Senate (last one in 2003-04 I believe?) And Robert. Byrds turnaround seems genuine in that he had no need for Black votes nor support since they were 3% of W. Virginia population . It was genuine & not pandering to get Black votes.

Funny how a drunken wife beating Christian like Zamperini(?) can redeem himself ,but Senator Byrd cannot.

If this is really the best you can do, you were better off ignoring it and hoping it would go away.

In a March 4, 2001 interview with Tony Snow, Byrd said of race relations:

They're much, much better than they've ever been in my lifetime ... I think we talk about race too much. I think those problems are largely behind us ... I just think we talk so much about it that we help to create somewhat of an illusion. I think we try to have good will. My old mom told me, 'Robert, you can't go to heaven if you hate anybody.' We practice that. There are white n**gers. I've seen a lot of white n**gers in my time, if you want to use that word. We just need to work together to make our country a better country, and I'd just as soon quit talking about it so much.

When asked about [the comment], Byrd responded,

"I apologize for the characterization I used on this program ... The phrase dates back to my boyhood and has no place in today's society ... In my attempt to articulate strongly held feelings, I may have offended people"

So Scalise claims that he didn't vet the group, didn't realize the type of group it was and apologized. Where's the problem? Oh yeah, he's a Republican. Different standard.

Anyone that thinks this story has legs with even a remote chance of taking off is simply delusional and high on wishful thinking no matter how much the drama queens and over reactionaries play on this "story".

This "story" is dead on arrival.

Ed Rendell, who is Jewish by the way, also honored Farrakhan when he was the mayor of Philadelphia. What's the big deal? Certainly Farrakhan is a racist, but unlike David Duke, he has done some positive things in the community, such as rehabililating young Black men when they get out of prison.

This made me think.

Isn't it odd that the Republican party is home to Israel Firsters & Neo Nazis like Duke(and White Nationalists).. Big tent ,huh?

You can tell what's dear to the heart of the many Louisiana Republicans when threads like this defending shenanigans surrounding David Duke (got 70% White vote in his Gubernatorial race here once) grow so large.

Of course one can. FYI, both Robert Byrd and Strom Thurmond voted FOR the Martin Luther King holiday, but while the PT both is willing to accept Republican redemption, they won't accept Democratic redemption.

It seems that you've accepted Byrd's redemption but not Zamperini's. Maybe those that accept Zamperini's redemption over Byrd's is because one seems disingenious and for political advantage, the other does not.
