No one expects it simply because any troops going through there are dead men walking after a long enough time.
The radiation level there had decreased so low that tour operators have been taking tourists to visit the site for years.

The area I’m focusing on is the Red Forest, which is still irradiated as frick.

With strict time limits for how long you're allowed to be in the zone. You can't just linger indefinitely.

I don't think the contamination is that bad. Hell, people still live in the area.
There are people that never left the exclusion zone after the meltdown, most died of old age. Many of the workers that built the new containment structure lived in the exclusion zone.

Breaking the sarcophagus irradiates large areas of Europe again and widens the exclusion zone in Ukraine, meaning that they don’t get to take advantage of the areas they have conquered.
Taking control of the exclusion zone doesn’t equal destroying the sarcophagus or the new safe confinement structure around it.

I wonder if this is to establish a forward base of operations or something - since it’s so desolate.

a quick look at google maps puts a main Hwy from Belerus to Kyiv that passes near the Chernobyl Exclusion zone....
Likely Russian troops on the hwy NEAR Chernobyl.....
The news flash I read - the Ukraine president said Russia is fighting to take over Chernobyl.
Maybe it got mixed up in translation. But I do know the Ukraine army was training there recently.

Not true. There are people still alive who never left the exclusion zone.
The surrounding area outside the power plant is inconsistent on radiation levels and pretty easy to navigate around pockets of high radiation which are marked with signs.
Understand that the radiation comes from radioactive pieces of reactor 4 from the explosion that were scattered. It isn’t a blanket area of equal radiation and many areas of the zone are completely safe to be in.
Tourists can even go into the control room of Reactor 4 now if they wear protective gear. It’s not as big a deal as most think it is outside of the actual elephants foot at the bottom of the reactor which will kill you in about 5 minutes if you get close to it
