Randy Weaver's daughter speaks about the incident: LINK

Basically, she rehashes a lot of what we already know. The FBI killed their dog first. This pissed off her dad, Randy, who told his son to fire back. So he did (no one was hit). From there the stand-off and escalation happened.

Randy himself was a former Special Forces operator and a white separatist. He was one of those apocalyptic people who believed the New World Order was going to form at any time and take over America. A white supremacist group tried to recruit him (a bunch of those guys in Idaho) but he refused to join.

While a bit kooky, he moved out in the middle of nowhere Idaho to be left alone.

Yes. He was a former member of the Army Special Forces (Green Berets). No idea if he ever saw combat -- not sure if he was old enough for Vietnam.

He was not. He was a combat engineer (Private First Class) assigned to a Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg.

Ruby Ridge was total bullshite.

As was Waco

Very true. The burning of the Mt Carmel compound was especially eye opening. To this day I don't know how Janet Reno or Bill Clinton escaped severe scrutiny over it.

I have fairly consistently heard him referred to as a "Green Beret" until you questioned it. Did some quick research and saw that this was (in fact) wrong. I think those against Randy play up the GB angle because it makes him seem more dangerous (and hence, why deadly force was authorized). From those that support RW, I think the GB angle gives him some mystique and gravitas.

Bottom line, this was a botched attempt at entrapment and turning an informant that led to the death of his son and the murder (yes, murder) of his wife.

This is not exactly how it happened. There was an initial exchange of gunfire because the feds shot the barking dog.

Yeah, I do not focus on the initial exchange because both sides are going to tell the story that is most advantageous to them. Bottom line, an initial encounter of six marshals with the Weavers resulted in a firefight and the deaths of Deputy U.S. Marshal William Francis Degan, age 42, the Weaver's son Samuel (Sammy), age 14, and a Weaver family dog, all by gunshot (quoted from Wikipedia).

None of that justifies the later shooting of Vicki Weaver.
