NOBODY does it better than the Gun Shop Owner in St Petersburg, FL in 1996 on Friday night.
Riot on US19. We are Officiating a High School Football Game two blocks away. First chopper flies in, nothing out of the ordinary, we're expecting the camera crew to run out on the sideline shoot a few plays then head for the next bank of lights. WRONG....another chopper, then another we had five choppers flying in a circle over the main drag two blocks from us. Suddenly our Umpire shouts "Ray! Viet Nam copter pilot." This chopper lays on it's side and slides across the sky .....tracers going up in the center of the circle. Brrrrrrrrrrt! AK-47 on full auto. Rioters were trying to get in the gun shop. Owner had a hatch in the roof, climbed out and opened up shooting up into the sky..... rioters turned and ran. They came back for another try ...Our Association had 10 Black St Pete Police Officers that all sat at the same table each Monday. I always sat with them. Best stories, they know the best places to go and the worst places to stay away from. The first car to arrive has one of our own inside. The business end of his shotgun came out of the car first. The rioters decided they could take one alone and started to approach .....The lead was this guy's neighbor. "N" I'll kill you where you stand" The group dropped back, three other cars arrive. They were arresting the group of eight when someone asked "Who is at St Pete High tonight?" They could see the bank of lights behind the gun shop..."Someone go get Jim's crew and get them the hell out of there now!" Ten police cars arrive and evacuated 3,000 fans, two teams and Administrators within 15 minutes.
Turns out the Gun Shop Owner had a Federal License for the full auto AK ....Gun Shop saved along with us ...
