The lad is missing the mark on that. They called him a murdering white supremacist many times.
His lawyers are probably democrats and he doesn't realize these lawyers are not serving his best interests.
Suing the former lawyers would be Priority #4. Suing the TOP 3 media fake news outlets would be the top of the list.

Going after his prior counsel is the low hanging fruit.
I'm not saying that those will be easily winnable claims, but in terms of the costs to bring that litigation, it will be much less expensive than going after the media. Those claims will also be much simpler, in legal terms, than will the complex litigation that will be involved in suits against the media.
Maybe the idea is to build up the litigation war chest by filing the most "simple" claims first, and then deciding if the media claims are financially viable to pursue if/when you're successful on your initial claims against prior counsel.
The media claims will be years of work and millions of dollars in costs, most of it occurring long after Kyle isn't garnering the media attention that he is right now.
If his current counsel think those claims are viable, they better have lots of time and lots of money before venturing down that road. I wouldn't expect the media to cave on this nearly as quickly as they did on the Covington kids (and we still don't know how much Sandman actually got $$$ wise).
(And, I hope they do venture down that road, but there's lots for them to plan for before doing so).

Intelligent people who understand slander law know that Kyle doesn’t have a good case at all for that.
He apparently has been told that now, hence his backing off.
When you are charged with a crime, can’t sue for libel or slander really.
See: Simpson, OJ. Anthony, Casey. Zimmerman, George. Etc.
