I'm going to give it one solid good try to see if you are willing to learn something today.
Firstly, I get you have been programmed to think of Big Pharma like one giant entity that controls all. But now, try to realize that there are multitudes of different companies that create different products in the medical world. There is not one "Big Pharma" where financial incentives for all the constituents are aligned. If your anecdote from earlier was true, you should already to know this to be a fact.
Now, let me use an analogy for you: let's say there's a company that makes a part necessary for internal combustion engines. Obviously, they would not want EVs to take off. It would hurt their bottom line. However, other companies couldn't give a shite less about that, and here we are with EVs every where.
Let's bring this to medicine. Say theres a company that makes insulin for diabetics. Sure, I agree with you that, for them, a cure for diabetes would be bad for their bottom line. However, what is stopping another company not in the insulin business from R&D'ing a cure for diabetes? Not only would they have the market cornered for the life of their patent(s), but curing diabetes--and try to stay with me here--doesnt mean you don't still have new patients because people are born with or develop diabetes all the time (this was the point of my cure =/= eradicate point). This company would instantly be a Fortune 500 company worth billions and billions.
Yet, you think there is no money in "cures." Because....thats what you've been told. Two seconds of critical thinking and a middle school understanding of capitalism should make it clear that makes 0 sense.

Brah, the fact that human life exists assures us of a ‘lifetime of customers.’ And customers is a gross way of thinking about patients. Elon Musk is a rare exception here, who would also be able to directly compete with Big Pharma should he get involved (although I think Neuralink should technically qualify).
