To be clear, Fields—or whomever was driving the car that careened down Charlottesville's Fourth Street on Saturday afternoon—is singularly responsible for the carnage he caused, and he should be held criminally accountable. He was charged with second degree murder, according to multiple media reports, and other charges are likely to follow.

Still, Charlottesville fits into a disturbing cycle. Beginning with protests at Donald Trump's campaign rallies last year, continuing through and beyond the inauguration the far left has met the violent rhetoric of the alt-right by glorifying political violence. The reaction has only reaffirmed and escalated the very fascist tendencies the left supposedly opposes.

As Robby Soave wrote shortly after alt-right ringleader Richard Spencer was punched in the face on Inauguration Day, "Striking Spencer isn't just morally wrong—it's tactically foolish."

Punching Nazis in the public square might make you feel good but it puts you a half-step closer to accepting that it's all right to run down the Nazi-punchers in the public square. What happened Saturday was not inevitable. I hope Heyer's death will generate a massive backlash against the alt-right. I hope it will cause the far-left to reconsider how they engage with fascists, white nationalists, and other enemies of freedom.

So Fields is a victim?

Something about straws and grasping

So he wants there to be a backlash against the alt-right but the far left just need to reconsider things? No backlash against them is warranted I guess.

I blame Obama's 8 years for starting, fueling and continuing the rising racial tensions and division of this country.

Indeed.

As I like to say...I have a difficult time respecting anyone, left or right, who thinks their "side" (roughly half the country, to some degree) is comprised of virtuous, noble, intelligent, and benevolent saints while the other "side" (again, about half the country) is replete with morons, charlatans, bigots, and evil-doers.

Both sides have their extremists, nut-jobs, terrorists, and purveyors of violence.

The Progs are trapped in a box of their own creation. They can't simultaneously champion Identity Politics and political street violence and then condemn Identity Politics and political street violence.

And when forced to champion or condemn it, they overwhelmingly champion it. Which renders them powerless.

It's quite the conundrum.

He is a victim, of the far left rhetoric and violence, what else could he do?

I understand the article, but cause and effect didn't start this decade. This has been a boil over from over a century of violence due to race, religion, power, etc. The same poor argument could be made about the baseball shooting, "well what did you expect after that much provoking?" Wait! Before you downvote that, there is no excuse for it, and no intend on using that as an actual point was being made. But the right has blatantly made trolling part of their everyday lives here. Liberal tears over something, even if the right doesn't agree, has been the goal recently. Everyone is acting like the kid who takes the ball home when he's about to lose, or turns off the Nintendo before the final round. What's important is staying current with the discourse. If something has happened to one side or the other, condemn the current issue. Don't deflect to previous reactions or situations. We're at a really sad point that we have a hard time admitting that killing is wrong, hope we can start to wise up.
