Congress has assumed the Post Office can do a better job than private companies of pre-funding their pension obligations.

They already have a postal money order system. Heck - you can already have what amounts to a "bank account" of sorts using a P.O. box and postal money orders.

FDIC is limited to what? 25k. Comforting. Do I have an alternative option? Or did the government force their way into the market?

The "post office is also a bank" system has already been tried by the Soviet Union. That didn't turn out too well.

The government was criticized for using these funds to engage in uneconomical infrastructure projects—what in America would be called pork barrel spending.


Wiki made it sound not so great, as what I quoted above.
