Dr. Jeremiah Johnston, a New Testament scholar specializing in the historical Jesus, archaeology, and ancient manuscripts, joins Shawn Ryan for an in-depth Easter special. The conversation centers on the **Shroud of Turin** as compelling scientific and historical evidence for Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection. Johnston, who once approached the topic as a skeptic, explains how extensive research across over 100 academic disciplines and hundreds of thousands of study hours shifted his view. He details the shroud's unique image formation—unreplicable by medieval art or photography—and its alignment with first-century Roman crucifixion practices, including severe flogging with a flagrum, crown of thorns wounds, and nail piercings consistent with Gospel accounts.

The discussion delves into the gruesome realities of Roman crucifixion, drawing on historical and forensic evidence to illustrate the torture Jesus endured. Johnston highlights physical details preserved on the shroud, such as blood flow patterns, wrist and foot wounds, and signs of trauma that match biblical descriptions. He emphasizes how these elements provide a "burial shot" of the events leading to the resurrection, arguing that the cloth's image suggests a burst of energy or radiation inconsistent with natural decay or artistic creation. Additional artifacts, like early New Testament manuscript fragments and bone boxes (ossuaries), including one potentially linked to James, the brother of Jesus, offer extra-biblical corroboration for the existence and family of Christ.

Johnston explores ancient texts and manuscripts, including the **Dead Sea Scrolls** (such as the Great Isaiah Scroll from Qumran, predating Jesus by centuries) and Codex Vaticanus. These demonstrate the remarkable stability and early transmission of biblical texts. The episode also covers the **Book of Enoch**, its inclusion in the Ethiopian Bible, and references to the **Nephilim** from Genesis 6—giant offspring of "sons of God" and human women—discussing their interpretation in Second Temple Judaism and connections to broader apocalyptic themes. These topics provide context for how extra-canonical writings influenced or paralleled early Christian thought without undermining core doctrines.

On the **Ark of the Covenant**, Johnston addresses popular myths and legends about its fate, separating historical speculation from reliable evidence. He clarifies misconceptions while tying the conversation back to themes of covenant, temple, and messianic expectations in ancient Judaism. Throughout, he contrasts Jewish hopes for a conquering Messiah (as seen in certain Dead Sea Scroll fragments like 4Q285) with the unexpected suffering servant and resurrection narrative fulfilled in Jesus.

Johnston shares his personal journey from skepticism to faith, driven by cumulative evidence including the shroud's scientific puzzles, manuscript reliability, and archaeological finds. He presents an intellectually rigorous case that the resurrection is rooted in tangible history rather than mere belief. The episode encourages viewers to examine the data, bridging faith and reason, and underscores the transformative hope offered by Easter in light of this evidence-based approach to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. The full discussion runs nearly three hours, blending scholarly depth with accessible storytelling.

Book of Enoch is not biblical. Written by multiple authors waaaay too late.

But my atheist acquaintances like to refer to it because it deals with the aliens and it actually quoted in the Bible. It’s the only time they recognize Jesus is when they want to talk about the watchers.

Still not Biblical.

The shroud of Turin im convinced is 100% legit. There’s just no way something like that could be forged. As for the Book of Enoch I’ve read it but I take it with a grain of salt as it’s not scripture. I find the people who are really into the book of Enoch get way too deep into conspiracy theories for my taste. The Ark of the Covenant stuff is the same way
