both are allies with NK and Syria if either or both of those countries were drawn into a potential world wide conflict with the U.S. somehow then yes I think both China and Russia would gear up as well

Maybe not the point of your post but something catastrophic would have to happen to the US so we could not respond to aggression from an axis of:

WW3 will never happen as long as nuclear weapons exist. There will be proxy wars between nuclear nations but never direct conflict because of mutually assured destruction. Countries fight wars over money and resources but this is moot if your country will not be around to enjoy the booty of war. Furthermore we must consider the global economy. China relies on exports to the US, without them they go into depression. They can't afford a war with the US. The US economy is as close to a stand alone as there is, but we go into a depression when we lose key trading partners just like everybody else. Global war is not even profitable as well as suicidal for nations.
