On this day—June 1, 1862—General Robert E. Lee took command of the Army of Northern Virginia.

After General Joseph E. Johnston was severely wounded at Seven Pines, Lee assumed leadership of the Confederacy’s most important army defending Richmond. The 55-year-old Virginian, a West Point graduate, Mexican War hero, and former Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy, had initially declined to fight against his home state before resigning his U.S. commission.

What followed was legendary. Lee would transform the Army of Northern Virginia into one of the most celebrated fighting forces in history, winning stunning victories at Second Manassas, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville, and leading his men through the brutal campaigns of 1864–65 with unmatched skill and dignity.

To Southerners, he remains the embodiment of courage, honor, and devotion to duty.

Political, societal things might be different today if only ....

On This Day — June 1

In 1792, Kentucky officially joined the United States as the 15th state, carved from Virginia’s western territory.

Exactly four years later, on June 1, 1796, Tennessee entered the Union as the 16th state, coming from the old Southwest Territory (formerly North Carolina land).

Two frontier states. Same admission date. Four years apart. The early American republic was expanding fast, turning western settlements into states.

He’s a top 5 American of all time.

The spirit of this nation perished at Appomattox.

As a Yankee, I respect Lee.

Men like Eisenhower, Teddy Roosevelt, and Winston Churchill had very high words of praise for Lee. Ike kept a portrait of him.

Lee could have easily refused to surrender, continue a guerrilla campaign against the north, costing more lives of his men in a quixotic quest, but he acknowledged reality and laid down his arms. He implored his men to give up the cause.

You hear snarky comments about him being a traitor, but in Lee’s time, people generally considered themselves citizens of their state before their country

The far left idiots that like to tear down statues have smeared Lee over the years and gave him a bad reputation. From what I have learned about him though Lee is probably one of the most classy people of that time period. He certainly should get more respect than he does.

Part of Marxist theory is to remove all culturally significant remnants of countries and regions that they fear ... fear of remembrance, fear of heritage.

Their aim is to eliminate pride in one's lineage.

They came after The South during the George Floyd Riots and were successful in removing over 120 significant statues and landmarks across our beloved South ... and Floyd overdosed in the far left bastion of Minnesota.

Think about that.

Well, that’s your opinion. An incorrect one, but you’re entitled to it.
