Among other drugs, the doc was writing prescriptions for fentanyl

Ho. Li. Fuk

quote:

In one suit, an attorney for the family of Melissa Penix, an 82-year-old woman who went to Mount Carmel West for stomach pains in November, said she was given 2,000 micrograms of fentanyl about five minutes before she died.

quote:

An Ohio doctor accused of ordering excessive and potentially fatal doses of opioids to dozens of near-death patients is facing multiple counts of murder, prosecutors announced Wednesday.

William Husel voluntarily surrendered to authorities and was charged in 25 deaths following a six-month investigation by the Franklin County Prosecutor's Office. The patient deaths exposed a stunning case of medical oversight and alleged medical malpractice, and called into question how repeated failures potentially involving 30 or more employees could have gone unchecked for so long.

Well, in his defense he's a one-man operation.

Not really prescribing them. These were administered IV, to ICU patients. ??Euthanasia?? case. Much more will need be looked into. Faulty pharmacy checks, RNs complicit, etc.

I work in a hospital with an ICU. If the drugs were administered IV in the ICU, some doctor wrote the prescription for it first.

Doctors orders.
But as you work in that environment, you probably realize this is likely a multifaceted, rather one-man, problem.

How so?

Husel, 43, was employed with the Mount Carmel Health System, one of the largest in central Ohio, from 2015 to 2018. He was first suspended on Nov. 21 and then fired two weeks later.

As someone working as clinical pharmacist in hospital and having been a director as well, the responsibility goes to pharmacy and nursing as well. I have followed this case from afar and there are many steps in the process that failed. There will be root cause analysis and process improvement plans in place for CMS and TJC inspectors that will be crawling up their rectums.

Maybe you should get out more. All fan bases have some folks that fit that description. I don't judge all other fan bases as you do.

Apologies for the offenses you have suffered.

Come down to the US Virgin Islands. We do not suffer those problems.

My wife and I were watching the news a while ago and we looked at each other and pretty much at the same time. He is a critical care doctor. He ordered and someone had to administer it. Poor nurse indeed not to recognize a lethal dose of a drug that's in the news everyday. I thought fentanyl was an OR drug but it's been a long time since I did that work.

Fentanyl is still predominantly an OR drug because of its short duration of action and high potency. Unless there is allergy in the mix, MSO4, demerol, or dilaudid remain more common and better suited adjuncts in the ICU.

Of course, but you said he wasn’t really prescribing the drugs.

Dozens of nurses, pharmacists and managers were put on administrative leave during the investigation. Some are no longer employees, while others could face further action from agencies like the Ohio Board of Nursing.

In hospital they are issued via doctor's orders which technically are different than scripts. E.g., no DEA# on DO's . Obligatory DEA# for opioid prescriptions. Prescriptions generally instruct outpt pharmacies. Doctor's Orders instruct inpatient personnel

Dr. Husel has a previous criminal record. In 1996, he pleaded guilty to improperly storing a destructive device or pipe bomb at Wheeling Jesuit College in Wheeling, W.Va. He was sentenced to six months in jail and one year of supervised release. He admitted that, after the device detonated in 1994, he attempted to falsely incriminate another person by placing a pipe and other items in the person’s car.

That's a nasty little detail. Damn.
