The IRS released guidance on March 30 informing the public that filing a tax return is required to receive the payment if they haven’t already filed their returns for the 2018 and 2019 tax years.

People who typically do not file a tax return will need to file a simple tax return to receive an economic impact payment. Low-income taxpayers, senior citizens, Social Security recipients, some veterans and individuals with disabilities who are otherwise not required to file a tax return will not owe tax,” the guidance states.

Come on. That's not needed. No reason to require an 80 year old to have to file income tax form. That's just stupid.

hell yeah she should file.

She worked her whole life. No need in making it hard on them period. Just like the hoops my dad has had to go through just to get part of his VA benefits.

Now, if you are capable and not retired (etc,) sure. Fill it out.

But there are many people who don't have a way to get that done and they are in need as much as anybody.

Common sense should return to DC from both directions.

Well, that is ridiculous. This is perfectly set up for scammers to scam some elderly person. What a disaster this could potentially be.

Why would an 80 year old on social security get a check that should be designed to go to those affected by thos by losing their job?

Why the hell do social security non-filers need a boost for unemployment?

Makes absolutely no fricking sense

While that may be a valid question prior to the bill being signed, it's no longer one at this point. They will.

So the question is why make it harder when it's not needed. There is no valid answer on the process of this that's been given by anybody yet.

This isn't unemployment. It's the stimulus that most Americans are getting.

Grand parents are big spenders on kids and grand kids.

But again, not really relevant at this point. It's done. Signed. So why make it hard of the elderly?

everyone on soc sec has documented income records with the IRS and virtually none meet the threshold to pay taxes so they havent filed a return for many many years

their checks should be automatic just like the welfare crew and anyone on the gubment teet

Political disaster avoided. This horrible idea has been reversed.

BREAKING: Treasury now says Social Security recipients who don't normally file tax returns will NOT have to file to get the $1,200 check.

Treasury reversed course after pressure from Democrats, some Republicans and media/advocates.

Yep, agree. Trump was asked about it earlier and he looked to have no clue what was going on. He turned around and asked Pence if he knew anything and he said he didn't either. He said he was going to check in to it.

The system they're using is the income tax system and the eligibility criteria they're using is AGI.

I don't know why you would have a problem with that. Online directly through the IRS, it would take the typical person about 5 minutes to file such a form.
