NPR fact checked article on Trump’s Hunter Biden claims

When President Trump and Joe Biden faced off for the first — and so far, only — presidential debate late last month, Trump attacked his Democratic rival with a false claim about Hunter Biden.
quote:
"Hunter got thrown out of the military," Trump said of the former vice president's son. "He was thrown out, dishonorably discharged, for cocaine use."
quote:
That's factually wrong. Hunter Biden, 50, received an administrative discharge, not a dishonorable discharge, from the U.S. Navy Reserve in 2014 after he tested positive for cocaine.

Good lord. Hell of a fact check.

What is an administrative discharge

Laughing....not much about it is wrong. From what I gather as a layman it's the military's way of firing you or just getting rid of you.

Admin discharges are usually given for medical purposes or "other reasons". I've seen a lot of guys fail drug tests and get admin discharges.
You have to do pretty crazy shite to get a Dishonorable, most people who get kicked out get Bad Conducts at worst.

Trump was right, he got preferential treatment, though
Posted on 10/18/20 at 8:56 pm to Deuces
That means he can still buy a gun to shoot himself.

So he was administratively discharged without honor?

Discharge and separation from the military are two different things. You can be separated administratively or medically (prior to retirement). However the nature of your discharge (honorable, other than honorable/general, dishonorable) can differ. So, for example, someone can be administratively separated and still receive an honorable discharge depending on their command's prerogative. I imagine for Hunter Biden, he received an ADSEP (admin separation) with an other than honorable discharge. Command likely did not want to deal with any PR blowback pursuing a dishonorable discharge haha

Looking at Hunter, I don’t doubt it.

Dishonorable extends to civilian life, and is basically the same as being a convicted felon. Can't buy a gun, can't vote, can never enter a military base. I think you also might not be able to travel internationally. I don't think anyone can reverse it either.

I am not military...
but sounds like what one might get if you have good enough connections to prevent getting a dishonorable discharge.

Cocaine use should have been a punitive discharge (bad conduct or dishonorable).
Also should have served time in a pound me in the arse prison.

Hunter was a piece of fricking shite who was NOT EVER qualified to be a commissioned officer. If he was in fact given preferential treatment and chaptered out, aka, "administrative discharge" for drug use, his DD214 should most definitely reflect that his discharge, while maybe not classified as "dishonorable" (obviously due to his last name), it should as a MINIMUM reflect the terminology, "Other Than Honorable."

When I was in if you popped positive you were dishonorably discharged but you could down grade it to an administrative discharge upon appeal. Regardless, he was discharged under less than honorable conditions.

This never happens in my experience.

administrative discharge
I served six years in the Army and am the son of a Army retiree. The first 24 years of my life revolved around the military. These are weasel words. It's not going to say "administrative discharge" on his DD214 copy 4. Hunter more than likely got a Other than Honorable Conditions.
Not only that thanks to Hunter's daddy being VP and got him TWO waivers to get a commission, he can't receive a bad conduct or dishonorable as a commissioned officer.
Regardless, an OTHC discharge is pretty fricking bad. You get no veterans benefits. You're still considered a shitbag.
