The majority of Americans have not saved adequately for retirement. Social Security in itself does not provide enough to retire and is just a complement.

If you are not prepared for retirement aren't you setting yourself up to be a freeloader and rely on the government or others when you retire?

Also while I know everyone on here will come on talking about what an OT baller they are and all mastered the stock market, stats don't lie and I'm pretty sure the TD crowd represent the general population in managing their finances.

I'll hang up and listen.

If your plan is to rely on the government to take care of you in your old age, you're a moron and by definition, a loser.

Totally agree. Too bad this is the default for most of our country since they can't plan on their own.

Unlikely. This board is FAR FAR FAR from an accurate representation of the American populace.

Trump was polling what >90% here? And he actually got <50%.

What's to master? Ten percent of your income and over 30-40 years the market averages 7%-8% annually. Invest in index funds and you'll do fine. I know mechanics and mailmen who are worth a million or just shy of a million. Now, that's not "baller" but they live nicely and do just about everything they care to do.

So, they're doing better than average.

If you go through life without saving up and expecting the government to bail you out you're sincerely retarded.

Social security was at one time suppose to be some ones retirement plan. That 12% taken from paychecks will give a miserable return compared to other retirement investment vehicles. I planned my retirement without it and quite frankly recommend anyone do the same. There's a lot of ways of saving money that won't crush your lifestyle. Learning how to make your money ,whatever amount you have , work for you is something that needs to be stressed more.

Most likely. There isn't a huge ton of information available on income around here, but you could find enough evidence to say that Poli Board posters are probably higher earning than the average American.

Also probably more aware of issues like this given their interest in politics regardless of ideology.

the majority of americans are not able to save a dime and most have cashed in or borrowed against retirement the last 15 years.

Your premise is faulty. Americans have not failed to save. They have robbed peter to pay paul to save their families.

The majority of americans cannot save because they have been punished by a marxist zealot named barry soetero in the name of destroying the american family, thus our entire economy.

Payback is gonna be fun the next 8 years.

I know people on the Left make fun of the majority on this board, but if you read the posts, they are far more literate than the average American.

I don't think most on here actually appreciate how dim the average American is generally. Think about how many are so unengaged and uninformed that they didn't bother to vote.

I lost $90,000 during the housing bust a couple years ago. Last year I lost $160,000 in the stock market. shite happens.

I'm assuming you're too young to know this, but as you go along in life, you may come to realize that not all financial misfortunes are due to having a "freeloader" mentality. Perhaps you'll learn these lessons the way most people do–through your own experience, although I certainly wouldn't wish for financial adversity on you or your family.

I advise you to concentrate on your own problems, including your recklessly judgmental attitude, before pontificating to the rest of us.

Just A question if a person only makes minimum wage how can they afford to save for retirement? This is not a shot at anyone just a question.

Be good enough to earn better than minimum wage. It really doesn't take much.

It is called "rational ignorance". Vast majority of americans are struggling to pay the rent, monthly expenses, college tuition for kids...and they are losing the fight..

too busy struggling to pay attention and within that group, many stopped caring.
