The rope is attached to the door and the end that gets pulled goes up and down. When it is up, people/cars go through the door. If you look at the height of the end of the rope when the door is open, imagine that with a plastic or wood handle on the end, and a car in the bay forcing people to walk where the rope is. It hits you in the head. A knot in the rope is pretty standard - it does not hurt when you walk into it. I would not be surprised if the company that made or installed the garage door put the knot in the rope.

True there. A perfection loop is a pain in the arse to tie! Especially when you're trying to hurry up and connect your leader to the fly line while the trout are biting all around you!
