That will be its demise. How many people from the beginning era of social media still use it? Who still wants to scroll facebook or instagram when you're just inundated with ads now?
Like 95% of civilization, probably closer to 98% while they're driving.

It's absolutely going to wreck society and I don't see how it works. UBI isn't even a viable short term solution. Destroying people's self worth derived from being productive can't be undone by putting them on welfare.

Exactly, this isn't a certain product becoming obsolete, it's making humans obsolete by design.

And we're using public funds to expedite the process.

It will create an economic paradox that we have no plan to contend with

Well we're in economic war with China who gives zero fricks.

The productivity gains are going to be realized, the only thing worse socially than realizing those gains due to AI is not realizing them and your competition does.

Yeah I understand the "why" in this case and don't disagree with it completely.

But if we're going to run at warp speed towards economic doom it might be good to have some brain storming sessions on how to best address the future.

Uncle Ted was right.

They'll vote instead, vote to take from you and you will give it up

If we blunder into 10%+ unemployment without any type of plan or forethought the 'emergency plan' we come up with will be a Band-Aid at best but more likely a disaster

We can act now, in case the predictions of "AI will create jobs as it replaces them" fall flat

We can start now, if AI driven unemployment reaches >4% we can drop the work week to 32 hours and start a UBI of $250/month. Have this UBI replace all Federal Level Welfare programs and have Social Security and SSI payments offset against it (UBI payment would be lowered or eliminated by Social Security or SSI payments). This would have a net cost of about $50-$150 billion/year. To make up for that, start taxing automation and commercial use of AI.

If AI driven job losses increase scale accordingly:

>4% $250/month and shorten work week to 32 hours
>5% $500/month and shorten work week to 24 hours
>7% $750/month
>8.5% $1,000/month
>10% $1,250/month
>11% $1,500/month
>12% $1,750/month
>13% $2,000/month
>14% $2,250/month
>15% $2,500/month

If these job losses never materialize, then none of this is ever implemented and costs nothing but if they do and accelerate faster than we can react we already have built in triggers to address it
