Attorney William Baer, father of a 14-year-old girl at Gilford High School in Gilford, New Hampshire, was speaking out against the assignment of the book Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult.
According to WND, the book contains explicit descriptions of sexual encounters and mentally and sexually abusive situations, as well as a mass murder in a school.
Mr. Baer maintained that the school should have alerted parents to the contents of the book before it was assigned, which apparently had been done at the school in the past.
During the meeting called to discuss the concern that several parents had over the contents of the book, Baer tried to read the passage above but members of the school board refused to allow him to do so when he violated a two-minute rule for speakers.
During the heated discussion a police officer appeared and forced Baer to stop speaking. The parent was physically removed from the meeting and then handcuffed.
After her father was physically removed from the meeting, Baer's daughter, Marina, stepped up to speak out for her father.
"I just watched my father get arrested because he broke the two minute rule at a Board of Education Meeting. This just shows that you resort to force at the first turn of conflict and I'm appalled," Marina Baer said.
I took it upon myself to see what was in the book. Here is a page I found:
quote:
She'd been floating along pleasantly in a haze of familiar. Yes, Matt had kissed her-one short one, then a longer, hungry kiss, as his hand worked open the clasp on her bra. She lay lazy, spread beneath him like a feast, as he pulled off her jeans. But then, instead of doing what usually came next, Matt reared over her again. He kissed her so hard that it hurt. "Mmmph," she said, pushing at him.
"Relax," Matt murmured, and then he sank his teeth into her shoulder. He pinned her hands over her head and ground his hips against hers. She could feel his erection, hot against her stomach. It wasn't the way it normally was, but Josie had to admit that it was exciting. She couldn't remember ever feeling so heavy, as if her heart were beating between her legs. She clawed at Matt's back to bring him closer.
"Yeah," he groaned, and he pushed her thighs apart. And then suddenly Matt was inside her, pumping so hard that she scooted backward on the carpet, burning the backs of her legs.
"Wait," Josie said, trying to roll away beneath him, but he clamped his hand over her mouth and drove harder until Josie felt him cum.
Semen, sticky and hot, pooled on the carpet beneath her. Matt framed her face with his hands. "Jesus, Josie," he whispered, and she realized that he was in tears. "I love you so goddamn much." Josie turned her face away. "I love you, too."
She lay in his arms for ten minutes and then said she was tired and needed to go to sleep. After she kissed Matt good-bye at the front door, she went into the kitchen and took the rug cleaner out from underneath the sink. She scrubbed it into the wet spot on the carpet, prayed it would not leave a stain.

Yep, nothing inappropriate for a middle-schooler there

I'm sorry.... why on earth is that trash being assigned in schools?

Good thing it didn't involve two dudes. Otherwise, he would have been arrested for being a "homophobe" and Toddy would be posting constantly about how the police were heroes for protecting the rights of all homosexuals.

i think this is germans but I hope this school and the police has to pay for this, a man shouldn't be taken away in handcuffs from a school function for "violating the 2 minuet rule." I can understand wanting to keep a limit on how long people can speak so that no-one can get out of control but arresting someone for going over the limit is just horrible. Yes the guy was slightly out of line but simply letting him talk making his point than moving on would have caused the situation to be handled a lot better. I really do think that the people in control really don't have any real leadership skills they are just administrators who delegate and do make any hard decisions. It's crazy to think that a teacher or principle or someone in charge of a middle school or high school couldn't be able to calm someone down who was cutting up at a parent meeting.

I wouldn't want my 14 year old reading that crap, either.

I like how everyone is freaked about the sex but not the mass murder. Our priorities in this country are so fricked up.

"Jesus, Josie,"
Maybe the father was a militant atheist who objected to a religious reference?

and she realized that he was in tears.
I can't speak for any other male on the board, but I've never felt like crying after sex.

It really is sad.
Apparently, people can't handle others being upset at them. Their first reaction is "He's out of control! Officer, help!"

here is the amazon.com review of the book
Note: I don't want a 14 year old to read about whether it's ok for a kid to murder because of bullying, even if the answer is no, there is no reason a middle schooler should be forced to deal with questions like that, now some can I'm sure but others may not.
quote:
Best known for tackling controversial issues through richly told fictional accounts, Jodi Picoult's 14th novel, Nineteen Minutes, deals with the truth and consequences of a smalltown high-school shooting. Set in Sterling, New Hampshire, Picoult offers reads a glimpse of what would cause a 17-year-old to wake up one day, load his backpack with four guns, and kill nine students and one teacher in the span of nineteen minutes. As with any Picoult novel, the answers are never black and white, and it is her exceptional ability to blur the lines between right and wrong that make this author such a captivating storyteller.
On Peter Houghton's first day of kindergarten, he watched helplessly as an older boy ripped his lunch box out of his hands and threw it out the window. From that day on, his life was a series of humiliations, from having his pants pulled down in the cafeteria, to being called a freak at every turn. But can endless bullying justify murder? As Picoult attempts to answer this question, she shows us all sides of the equation, from the ruthless jock who loses his ability to speak after being shot in the head, to the mother who both blames and pities herself for producing what most would call a monster. Surrounding Peter's story is that of Josie Cormier, a former friend whose acceptance into the popular crowd hangs on a string that makes it impossible for her to reconcile her beliefs with her actions.

quote:Well, there are some gay themes in the book. Here are some passages I found:
Good thing it didn't involve two dudes. Otherwise, he would have been arrested for being a "homophobe" and Toddy would be posting constantly about how the police were heroes for protecting the rights of all homosexuals.
quote:
Matt suddenly twisted sideways. "Jesus Christ. Stop looking at my dick."
"fricking fig," Drew said.
Peter immediately turned away. What if it turned out they were right? What if that was the reason his gaze had fallen right there at that moment? Worse, what if he got hard right now, which was happening more lately?
That would mean he was gay, wouldn't it?
"I wasn't looking at you," Peter blurted. "i can't see anything."
Drew's laughter bounced against the tile walls of the shower. "Maybe your dick's too small, Mattie".
When he was around Josie, he didn't feel anything-didn't want to kiss her or hold her hand or anything like that. He didn't think he felt those things about guys, either; but surely you had to be gay or straight. You couldn't be neither.
Something else I found:
quote:
She'd already tried to get details out of Josie last night about Matt - important things, like how big a dick he had and if he had a clue how to use it.

That's getting pretty close to rape.

oh my
note: who ever assigned this book should be fired and never allowed to teach again. To think that it is appropriate to give 14 year olds book that contains sexual content even if just words is horrible, I don't care if you ask for parents permission there is no good reason to do something like this. Granted there could be instances where sexual content or nudity could be appropriate in a class. But I don't think this is one of those things.

Nah, it's cool. It's just indicative that our society is becoming more open to sexual behavior and not being such prudes. It's a great thing!

Yeah, so obviously, the parents had a real gripe with what was assigned.
And then the dad gets arrested for violating the "two-minute rule" at the meeting with the school board.
Why couldn't the officer just force him to leave if he was actually being disruptive? Why arrest him?

En Loco Parentus is how the schools view the children and the parents be damned if they object to that idea in any way. The school has absolute control of every bit of the curriculum, the parents must gain access to the schools for entry to be allowed by the Gestapo. Home schooing is the only alternative and it has many examples o being a good thing to choose to opt for from across the nation. You can bet that the board members snickered as he was cuffed. A simple recall for all of the members of the board that needs to be started as a remedy ASAP.

Pretty much describes the liberal no tolerance attitude.
