According to a 2018 study by Northwestern Mutual, 21% of Americans have no retirement savings and an additional 10% have less than $5,000 in savings. A third of Baby Boomers currently in, or approaching, retirement age have between nothing and $25,000 set aside.

The Economic Policy Institute (EPI) paints an even bleaker picture. Their data from 2013 reports that "nearly half of families have no retirement account savings at all." For most age groups, the group found, "median account balances in 2013 were less than half their pre-recession peak and lower than at the start of the new millennium."

The following do not include mean retirement accounts, as this would be statistically less informative than median data.
• Age 32 - 37: $480
• Age 38 - 43: $4,200
• Age 44 - 49: $6,200
• Age 50 - 55: $8,000
• Age 56 - 61: $17,000

Keep buying your oversized houses and F450s in order to keep up with the joneses. Don’t worry “conservatives” the government will bail you out.

UBI is coming faster than you expect.

Bunch of idiots. Everyone should have some type of retirement plan. Putting 150 per paycheck in your 401k is nothing. Cant spend what you dont see

I don’t know why any logical person would think otherwise. Just look around, even more affluent communities, people spend money like it’s on fire.

we already have a basic income payment (that pays more than UBI will) for retired people. what does UBI have to do with people not saving?

Hey jackass, you do realize that the government has zero money of its own, right?

Not in all cases, but people in the lower economic realm are poor planners. In most cases, it is why they are in that realm.

I suspect you will find most conservatives have retirement savings above the median.

99 percent of these people you think you’re making fun of with this comment have 401ks.

If not for 401k I might have saved very little.
It now has enough to pay off all my debt and my house.
Also staying with one job the last 20 years gave us some financial stability.

No they are economically disadvantaged and don’t have access to the same tax advantaged retirement accounts.

In fact the poorest amount us are the most thrifty and save whatever meager amounts they can. Instead of hiding it from taxes they are storing coins and singular dollars under their mattress.

Pretty much everything that's not spent on bills goes in my retirement accounts.

And what does this have to do with the OP?

It ain't like UBI is going to increase the savings rate for retirement AND, we already have a program that gives virtually everyone in retirement money.

If only the progressive democrat hero, LBJ, hadn’t cracked open social security to pay for the war in Vietnam.

Downhill ever since.

I'm guessing within 5 years the Democrats are coming after retirement accounts to redistribute.

Is this the “freedom dividend” your boy Yang foolishly compared to a corporate dividend?

fricking boomers aren’t retiring and moving on, preventing Gen X and Millennials from moving up to better positions. No wonder you have Millennials wanting free stuff
