My wife just lost her job because of the tariffs with China

She had started with a company who does large trade shows for the textile industry in a marketing position in April. These shows are very large and attract buyers and sellers from around the world. Sign ups have been down more than 30% this year from normal Chinese attendees because of the ongoing fears of the tariffs. As you would imagine the Chinese are one of the largest blocks in the textile industry. China also censors the ability for their people to get accurate information from news sources outside of the country which further produced fear of spending thousands to attend the event.
Yesterday she was given severance (which I commend them since she was still in the 90 day probationary new hire period) because of the impact that the lower attendee sales were having in the Chinese market.
Granted marketing normally gets cut first and especially a new hire scenario, but it does sting to have the tariffs/trade war be the reason for her distress and impact the flyAU home directly.
It will all be fine, just figured I would give a first hand account of ways this sucks in the short term.
Carry on

Everything has pros and cons. Everything.
Hope your wife finds a good job soon.

Sounds like the problem is the Chicoms. Not the tariffs.

Damn that sucks. Maybe she could get on with a new American textile start up? Seems like there will be a big demand in the short term

It may suck in the long term too

Sorry.
I expect this to get "settled" by the end of the summer. Hopefully, she will bounce back quickly.

Sounds like we are winning this trade war, while all the fake news is publicizing is the results of small battles

Agreed.
Our company in a roundabout sort of way deals with textiles from a procurement standpoint. What does she "do" exactly? Maybe I can help you guys find a suitable gig.

Sorry to hear that. Does your wife specialize in the textiles market or does she just specialize in general marketing and learn the products/services of whoever hires her?
If it's the latter, there are tons of marketing opportunities opening up all over, especially in tech, so hopefully the flyAU household won't have to be down for long.
Good luck.

But we are certain you suck in the long term. Thanks for another data point to prove our determination.

Sorry to hear about your wife.
The good news is unemployment is at its lowest rate in decades so your wife will probably be just fine, maybe even getting a better job.
Good luck.

Always a silver lining: She now has experience to add to her resume and more opportunity to find a better position, and from more comfortable surroundings since she'll be searching from home!

Not as much as your entire miserable existence.

Sorry to hear about your wife's job, man.
Don't want to derail your thread, but I have a story about Chinese censorship I thought might relate. My wife works for a publishing company, and for some reason they use a printer out of China. I guess it was cheaper? In this case, that was a demonstrably bad decision. They put together a book, and the Chinese print shop held the book hostage and would not print it until they "corrected" a map in the book that showed Taiwan as a separate country from China.
Anyway, sorry to distract from your thread. I just find the Chinese censorship to be extremely odd.
ETA: Fixed because I confused Thailand and Taiwan.

In this economy? Definitely not.

She started in April. Its now the end of the June and they fired her.
Its a problem with the company not her or the tariffs

I'm glad your wife's company is not in the map business....
