Granted, Wil Wheaton is the epitome of “two hands to hold a coffee mug” and was universally despised by Trek fans (the Scrappy Doo of Star Trek), but JFC ……

Shut the frick up, Wesley

Probably to attract a younger audience. It goes without saying that Star Trek storylines are a lot more cerebral than Star Wars. I didn’t really have access to TOS growing up. Star Trek, the Movie was my first real exposure to Kirk & Co., and at age 11, I found it boring as frick. The next two installments (Kahn, resurrecting Spock) were much more exciting with more action. TNG, premiered while I was in college, and I must admit, I probably would not have become a fan but for the free pizza and soft drinks in the TV lounge every Sunday night.

PS: I know of three couples who never considered the name “Oliver” for their sons solely because of cousin Oliver.

IMHO, Cousin Oliver Syndrome is in fact more to get a female audience

Women like to see men tamed and domesticated. Having kids around does that.

He never really made sense.
He was the son of the doctor and the captain openly didn't like him. Then he joins the academy but is sent right away to the enterprise as an Ensign. Where he jumped likely a hundred officers to become a Helsman. Then he became a non corporal being and was written out the show.

Episodes centered around him were bad.

My comment was limited to Wesley Crusher. Brady Bunch was before my time. But you’re probably right about cousin Oliver. It’s also an attempt to inject life into a series that’s growing stale (Chiachi on Happy Days. Alex on Little House). I think with Wesley Crusher it was the reverse. I think the character was given decreasing relevance in the show due to negative audience feedback. I remember one episode where a society was discovered that imposed the death penalty for all offenses. Wesley was facing the death penalty for accidentally damaging a flower bed or something while frolicking with a babe. I remember we were all disappointed when Picard managed to avert Wesley’s death sentence.
