As passed, HB 1523 specifically carves out three specific religious beliefs to receive extra protection under law: opposing same-sex marriage, opposing sexual relations outside of a man-woman marriage, and opposing the legitimacy of transgender identities. Mississippi already lacks any protections for the LGBTQ community, but HB 1523 further encourages discrimination by promising that those beliefs will be protected if people act upon them.

You're quoting commentary? Why? Do you still have a point left?

If the supreme court votes in favor of the state of Mississippi, they're efficiently nullifying equal protection under the 14th amendment.

Um...no they're not.

Sexual orientation and gender identification are not protected classes under federal law and are not mentioned in the 14th Amendment. The fact that some courts have bastardized the law to reach this conclusion does not change its text.

That said, even if these are protected classes, "Congress shall make no law...prohibiting the free exercise thereof [religion]." Hate to tell you, but there's nothing in the Constitution that says one right "trumps" another (other than the rights of the states versus the feds in the 10th).

Sounds like some of us disagree on the definition of "progress". I think it's regressive to force the religious to violate their consciences to accommodate what they view as sexual perversion.

TBH we should care. At least making contraception available and affordable will reduce both the amount of abortions performed and the amount of unprovided for kids with teen moms.

Yeah...but teenagers being refused condoms is not happening, so..

One can be morally opposed to such bigotry (I am) and still agree with allowing people to freely express their bigotry

No you're not dumbass How long are you going to ignore the clear wording of the Constitution? Progress is forcing someone to act contrary to their religious beliefs? If you believe that, you're the biggest bigot on this board.

Condoning freedom? Weird

I can disagree with a particular moral position but still support a persons right to act on it.

Good. America has forgotten that religion is just as much a protected class as anything else.

I wish it wasn't just religion on this one.

ANYONE should be free to refuse to apply THEIR frickING LABOR to something they don't feel comfortable with.

I honestly can't even believe in a supposedly free country, that's a point of contention.
