Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Monday promised to take up an immigration bill protecting an estimated 800,000 "Dreamers" from deportation and allow an open amendment process if Democrats agree to reopen the government.

But McConnell said his promise would only be good if Democrats agree to reopen the government.
“Should these issues not be resolved by the time the funding bill before us expires on Feb. 8, so long as the government remains open, it would be my intention to take up legislation here in the Senate that would address DACA, border security and related issues as well as disaster relief,” McConnell said, referring to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program started by President Obama that President Trump is winding

Yep, the shutdown is going so GREAT for Dems, I really hope they stick to their guns for all these poor immigrant children...

I'm a novice at senate rules but my limited knowledge of how senate debate works this seems to me that McConnell hasn't promised anything that wasn't already normal operating procedure.

He's agreed to allow debate. He hasn't agreed to any special consideration for passing an immigration bill.

If I'm incorrect could someone please tell me how I'm wrong?

If I'm right, this may be McConnell's way of letting Schumer and the Dems to save face and vote to pass the CR and end the shutdown.

"Well, we got the Republicans to agree to debate the immigration bill!"

He’s already broken those promises. There’s no reason to think he won’t break it again this time.

If he’s willing to allow a clean DACA vote on February 8th, why not just do it now? It makes no sense.

I think this is all there is to it.

Giving them the same thing they already had but making it sound like a big deal.

I would not have given them even that - Make them come back with hat in hand begging to re-open the government.'

I'd have liked for him to promote some special legislation that is specifically designated to be settled by simple majority vote to pay the military and other necessary items - nothing - nothing - nothing on the DEM agenda.

It's like they have nothing pressing going on right now?

It isn't just the DACA douches he is offering.

A clean DACA vote isn't happening. If we see anything, we'll see the Graham-Durbin immigration reform bill, and they'll hammer that thing out, most likely with some changes Schumer and Trump talked about Friday.

McConnell will cave and the blame will shift to House R's for holding fast.
