I keep hearing this on especially on Twitter in reference to Alexendria Ocasio Cortez 70% tax increase. It seems all the of lefties are for it and said it was successful in 50s.
Clearly not successfull at collecting 70% of anyone's marginal income. People out themselves as idiots when they spew this. I'd HAPPILY take 70% tax rates with the same deductions they had back then over todays rates. My tax bill would go from 5 digits to 4. Easily.
Also... notice how they only talk about the highest marginal rate...
Guess what, the lowest marginal rate in 1960 was (20%). Doub;e the current lowest marginal rate. Are they for raising that rate too? Let's see if they are intellecutally honest...

I completely agree, but I said something very different.

Brother, you just nailed it..
Aim high and go low.
Start at 10 million and it will drop to 1 million before you know it.

The problem (ten yrs ago) is there aren't enough rich people. You could tax them 100% and it wouldnt balance the budget at current spending level.
This. And that’s assuming those taxed at 100% still produce the same income, which they won’t. It’ll be zero, because no one likes to work and take risks for nothing. Hell, you could confiscate their entire wealth and it still won’t do the trick on a long term basis. That’s why socialist systems fall apart. As Thatcher said, they always run out of other people’s money.

Why would anyone who believes in a free country approve of the government confiscating 70% of his property?
That’s only 30% away from slavery by the way.

Because it’s not “your” stuff they are confiscating. It’s the “other guys” stuff.
Divide and conquer is the goal.

Right
And same logic applies when someone has their rights violated and no one stands up to defend them because "they were probably guilty" or "they were stupid and shouldn't have been rude to the cops"
Pretty easy to get rid of just about any principle when it doesn't apply to you
