The Moscow region is by far the best protected area of Russia. There are four concentric rings of air defense systems. And yet, a number of drones got through last night, and there are supposedly 3 dead civilians. Of course, some of the damage is caused by the AD systems themselves and by debris.

I think that this will be a real shock to the people of Moscow. And it will definitely lead to the Russian military doubling down on the defense of the capital (and leave other areas with even less AD)

Our responses to Russia’s prolongation of the war and its attacks on our cities and communities are entirely justified. This time, Ukrainian long-range sanctions reached the Moscow region, and we are clearly telling the Russians: their state must end its war. Ukrainian drone and missile manufacturers continue their work. I am grateful to the Security Service of Ukraine and all the Defense Forces of Ukraine for their precision. The distance from Ukraine’s state border is over 500 km. The concentration of Russian air defense in the Moscow region is the highest. But we are overcoming it. Glory to Ukraine!

Roman Petrenko — 17 May, 14:16

The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU), together with Ukraine's defence forces, struck a military facility and several oil infrastructure facilities in Moscow Oblast, as well as the Belbek military airfield in occupied Crimea on the night of 16-17 May.

Details: In particular, the Alpha Special Operations Centre and Ukraine's defence forces carried out strikes on several locations in Moscow Oblast.

The following targets were hit in Moscow Oblast:

the Moscow oil refinery
the Solnechnogorskaya oil pumping station
the Volodarskaya oil pumping station
the Angstrem plant, which supplies semiconductors for Russia's military-industrial complex and is under US sanctions.

In addition, according to the SSU, infrastructure and air defence assets at the Belbek military airfield in temporarily occupied Crimea were struck, particularly the following:

a Pantsir-S2 anti-aircraft missile system
a storage facility containing radar equipment for an S-400 system
an Orion UAV control system and a ground control station for Forpost UAVs
a ground-to-air data transmission point
the air traffic control tower and a hangar at Belbek airfield.

Background: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has thanked the SSU and the defence forces for their precision strikes on Moscow Oblast.
