As someone who lives here I see it different. I've never seen the town so destroyed and come back so quickly.

Same. I think Lake Charles is in a far better shape now than before the hurricanes with new businesses and more housing. People would always say there was nothing to do in Lake Charles for kids. Now you have Urban Air and Lake Area adventures.

Seems like political suicide. NLC was going to vote for MS regardless, but now you have longtime R supporters ditching NH for MS.
What was his reasoning for attending black business ribbon cuttings but not white business ribbon cuttings?

NLC didn't come back as well but there are 2 non-governmental reasons for that
1. As stated earlier, NLC has lost a lot of population already and a lot of the houses that are blights were already abandoned in 2020.
2. The typical issues with poor people who have multiple generations assume housing owned by the family who never did the paperwork for the succession correctly, which means insurance is unlikely and FEMA becomes impossible. That's not a government program and I think they even did some stuff to help people do just this.

You’re dead right about the blight. I’ve always thought that motorists driving on i10 from Texas see the absolute worst of Lake Charles. There’s only two ghetto gas stations and a Popeyes if you chose to risk your life and exit. At least now there’s a lake front that looks good.

At least the Greyhound station is gone. That was BAD, even during the day.

One thing I think Nick did really well was concentrate on drainage.
This can't be overstated.
It's been annoying with all the road closures but so very needed.

IMO he did lean too hard into low-income housing developments and only pushed for affordable housing in black areas. He seemed to prioritize that a bit too much when there are already tons of federal programs for developers and plenty of white people who also need affordable housing.
Well he clearly did this to help the people who voted against him yesterday. Lesson learned for future non-DEM mayors.

More blacks live within the city limits than whites. Much of the population lives south and east of the city these days plus many moved to Moss Bluff.
Just remember that the Post Office has Moss Bluff, Westlake and Grand Lake as Lake Charles addresses.

Moss Bluff has fought incorporation since I've been alive. I've heard rumors it's population is around 30k now
Naw dog. Westlake is an incorporated city with a mayor, PD, and 2 zip codes.

First black kid I had as a classmate with (Landry Junior High 1966) was a Simien. He said he wasn't black but a Mexican. This was before all black Sacred Heart High School consolidated with Landry and St. Charles to form St. Louis. We graduated from St. Louis High together. I don't know when St. Louis added Catholic to its name.

I am well aware of that and it has been for DECADES but the Post Office still has it as Lake Charles. Same for Grand Lake which isn't even in Calcasieu Parish.

I remember when Moss Bluff first started having a football team, Class B, playing against the likes of Hackberry (which had a team until the early 60 when they couldn't field 11 players after one quit) When Moss Bluff moved up to play in the same district with St. Louis, Iowa, Vinton, Kinder, W. O. Boston and Marion, everyone beat them something like 50-0. In 9th grade we won 78-0 That was back when schools had 9th grade teams and the Lake Charles public schools, 9th grades were in junior high except for W. O. Boston which only played against other all black schools. Marion was mixed and played against all white schools.

They finally changed it, I stand corrected. It was a Lake Charles post office address even up to 2000 when I moved to Baton Rouge. I had friends who moved there in the mid 1990's from Lake Chuck. Grand Lake is still a Lake Charles address

Not in my adult lifetime. Maybe in yours considering you are pushing 90

The reason Grand Lake and Moss Bluff don't have post offices is because, I believe, only incorporated cities have that designation. The reason Grand Lake has a Lake Charles address, even though it's in Cameron Parish mostly, is because LC is closer than Cameron.
Now Cameron DOES have a "post office" and this is what it looks like
Iowa mailing addresses also straddle 2 parishes. You always have to be careful filing a suit for an Iowa case b/c it may be in Jeff Davis or Calcasieu Parish.

IIRC, Loftin and Lundy was pissy because Hunter didn’t back him for governor.

I get all of that, but I remember when people in Grand Lake went to Lagrange. Barbe wasn't there yet. It's just like some in south Arkansas go to Louisiana schools like Haynesville or Texans in Bon Weir went to Merryville
