In the 1980s, Bass was affiliated with Line of March, a Maoist organization that aligned itself with the New Communist Movement, which in turn was a Maoist initiative inspired by international Communist movements in Cuba, Vietnam, and especially China. Line of March was founded in 1980 in Oakland, California, by the Communist and political activist Irwin Silber, who considered the Communist Party insufficiently radical for his taste.
