I don't think he threatened LSU football. It may have been thinly vailed to some, but to me what he was doing just was alarmist in nature. He was saying that if the university had problems that it could put athletics at risk. I'm not sure how all that works, but it sounds entirely plausible under certain conditions where the governor can't cut from anywhere other than healthcare and higher ed.

It was somewhat of a gaf in that he under-estimated how foaming at the mouth people would be over it. He could have been more effective at explaining that he would cut LSU before cutting healthcare and that he wanted the legislature to step up and make adjustments elsewhere besides higher ed and healthcare.
