Japan's Ministry of Defense is putting serious research and development resources into railguns, a hitherto science fiction weapon that fires projectiles very fast, very far, and at a high rate using electromagnetic power rather than gunpowder.

Some 6.5 billion yen (around $56 million) was allocated to the railgun project in the government's initial fiscal 2022 budget proposal. With China and North Korea developing difficult-to-intercept hypersonic weapons, will Japan succeed in making the weapon part of its air defenses?

"Our one hope is a prototype weapon called a railgun. It shoots a steel projectile at Mach 7." Shortly after these words are uttered, a railgun built onto a U.S. military guided-missile destroyer fires a hypersonic round that cleaves through a giant robot trying to destroy one of the Egyptian pyramids. So goes one of the scenes in the climax of sci-fi action film "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen."

Japan, South Korea and pretty much all of Europe need to do more to pay their "fair share" of defending our collective freedom.

Pretty sure the US has been developing railguns for years and years. I'm certain you can watch you tube videos of projectiles from railguns going through all kinds of stuff, pretty much all day.

I think the US had developed a railgun but decided it was not practical

I think they'll have a place one day. Generating and storing the power needed to operate a truly powerful one is still too much trouble.

Navy stops railgun production after 10 yrs of res and dev.

It is on hiatus for sure, but I think we will see it again. Our science is not far enough along yet in the energy department.

Per that article, resources are being focused on hypersonic missles and lasers. Personally lasers need to get some focus. You cannot beat speed of light weapons.

Hypersonic missles are being targeted for 20x speed of sounds - 13,000mph.

"Laser" will travel at ~671,000,000mph. That is a 5,161,438% increase in speed

Will a laser work in heavy fog, through storm clouds - etc?

They have been working on those problems for years, but short answer is yes it will work. There are limitations to be addressed still.

We are also talking about lasers that do not exist yet, more powerful advanced ones.

They've already been tested on active warships. They are still in development but well beyond theory. Not sure where the author came up with the idea that these are still the stuff of SciFi.

Why don't they just deploy their wave motion gun?

56 million sounds like the special effects budget on a Marvel film.

The limiting factor of rail guns and lasers has always been that the energy required will require a large jump in power technology.
