Isn't mailing back your personal belongings and writing a letter to your parents saying you no longer believe in the cause or want to be a soldier evidence that he wanted to desert?
Did he say in the letter he wanted to leave his unit and not return?

This confirms desertion.
I think desertion and being a traitor, while both pretty fricking rotten. Being a traitor is far worse and is something I think needs to be proven. I just don't think the label traitor is something that should be thrown around.
And he probably is, but the talking heads on television can't prove that. Proof he is a rotten soldier yeah, but traitor? That's for others to decide, and they don't work for CNN or Fox News.
