I simply do not believe this. Also, How many of your bankrupt cancer patients are/were smokers? Was that not a choice?

This is really a dumb and ignorant thing to say. Major illness wrecks more finances than anything. People with great balance sheets and good insurance go bankrupt every year battling things like cancer.

People with great balance sheets and good insurance get catastrophic.

they make up a negligible percentage of those in poverty
not negligible but admittedly small compared to the overall total. I was responding to the assertion that "poor people are poor because of bad decesions" and while that's true for some, that is a terriblly incorrect assumption to have about poverty as a whole.

Statistically speaking, the biggest drivers of poverty are things that you could characterize as personal decisions

Committing crimes, having a child out of wedlock, dropping out of high school, etc are catastrophic for future financial health.

Not at all. It's a lack of good jobs. That's why rural America has the highest poverty rates.

Actually, we don't consider ourselves 'good ole boys.' We prefer Neo-Nazi. Would you like to come to our next meeting?

There will be BBQ after the ceremony.

They don't. Dem controlled inner cities have the highest poverty rate. The main industry is welfare recipient.

my fricking arse. I don't believe you slightly. The fact that you say it's easy

It's easy. All it takes is a decision to not be a poor.

Have you ever tried to help a homeless person out for real, by offering employment? You'll find out real quick that a ton of people are comfortable in how they live, even if you and I wouldn't find it appealing. Even if they want a better life, they dont want the responsibility of gainful employment.

Yes. You aren't wrong, but the majority don't fit this description. The majority of homeless people have jobs. They want something better for themselves, and most will eventually get a good enough job to get themselves out. I do 100% agree tho I took a social psychology class in college and we spent a couple days talking about homeless people and the different groups they fall in "purposefully homeless" being one of them.

Poor people are poor because of the choices they make.

Although not 100%, this is largely true in the USA.

The comment about cancer patients is legit, but that's a small number when compared to a population of 300 mill.

My grandfather would qualify as poor, may parents clawed from poor to middle class, I'm fortunate enough to have made it to up perish middle class.

Three things that I attribute it to:

1) marriage before kids (although they were very young by today's standards)
2) work ethic
3) not living beyond their means.

In my case, they pushed me to get an education that allowed me to get ahead, but upward mobility is possible in America without it.
