Maybe you should ask how they all got here in the first place, and that maybe part of the goal was to increase the police state in response.

There are multiple levels of government from federal, to state to local. So it's a matter of where an issue like this is best handled at. Voter ID should be a thing in all 50 states, and illegals shouldn't be here to begin with, much less be allowed to vote.

But the problem with doing things on a federal level is that you allow them to do so in both ways. Right now for example in Florida we have great voter ID laws. But what if you allow the federal government to decide in this way and the next congress comes along and says - nobody can require an ID? And then as a resident of Florida, I end up getting fricked because my state wasn't fricked up already. At least I get good state laws here now, the majority of the issues don't affect me as a result.

So it's a tough one because the given intent is correct, but that doesn't necessarily mean the federal government is the best place for it. The power you give to Trump is the same power you give to someone like Biden.

Personally think we should get them out of the country completely overall. Can't vote in the elections if you aren't here illegally.
