but spending =/= the "P" in GDP. Productivity =/= just spending money, a look at welfare shows that. Keep throwing money at welfare recipients they still are not becoming productive.
Of course, efficient and effective spending and use of resources is going to have a better impact on the economy.

However, even if a person on welfare is completely unproductive, the economic activity of their spending will have some impact in the GDP, all else being equal.

Yes. And the discussion was based around why it dropped from 4.0% to 2.2% You said the 1.8% it was the a result Hurricanes, and I was disagreeing that it was SOLELY due to that.

Also watered down by their black market spending. Crack, heroin, pot, even still some bootleg booze, prostitution, etc., doesn't enter into the GDP. Their consumption of Cheetos and Cola's does though.

I’ll just add this concerning the 3Q GDP number:

quote:

The Census Bureau said Thursday the U.S. trade in goods deficit shrank by $62.9 billion in August, down $0.9 billion from $63.9 billion in July. Exports of goods for August were $128.9 billion, up roughly $0.3 billion from July, while imports were down $0.6 billion in August to $191.8 billion.

The report will be a net positive for third quarter (3Q) gross domestic product (GDP), which comes on the same day the final reading of second quarter (2Q) GDP came in at a solid 3.1%.
