Or had no slaves.
I'll bet Hanks Great Grandpappy had a stable of slaves, which led to his heirs being softer than a babies arse.

Most Southerners never owned slaves, Gomer.
Now, do the math. If you are a Southerner, whose family has always married other Southerners, you have 256 direct ancestors who were alive at approximately the time of the Civil War. What are the chances that none of those 256 people owned a slave? Vanishingly small.

but, if your family has now been here for four or five generations, the likelihood is pretty good that at some point they married into an antebellum Southern family.

The natives in Texas thought white Texans were the laziest humans on earth, because they required slaves to do their work.
I loathe a slave owner, and their descendants if they still profit.

I have all my rights. No one is trying to take rights away from me. My point is that he’s right that republicans do want to take away women’s legal rights
to abortions, gay people’s right to get married, people who want to smoke pots ability to choose to do so. With the exception of abortion, which i am against, none of these causes affect me. If the republicans pass a law that says gay people’s marriages are invalid, and you aren’t gay yourself, why would you care?

There is no legal right to an abortion.
If 555 of a state wants it banned, it should be banned.
If 55% want it legal, it should be legal.
You can move to another state.

quote:that is what is so funny about these debates. My family (now) is as “Texan” as they come. My first ancestors came here in 1832.
yeah, there is the other half that wore the gray
I suppose that that also makes us “Southerners“ in the sense of Civil War history at least.
Yet my paternal maternal great grandmother and her family came to Texas from Illinois after the war. Her father fought for the north, just as my paternal paternal family fought for the South.
at this point in history, I think that the person who has all 256 of those ancestors as antebellum southerners is very much the exception.

How many southern families do you think owned slaves in Louisiana? Just a percentage.

Someone who has inherited our past. The decadents of slave owners, the descendants of slaves, and the hillbillies and poor white trash. The stock that Robert E Lee and Martin Luther King come from. The stock that produced country music, blues, rock n roll, and every other genre of music that makes this country interesting. If when you were a child you never imagined what it would be like to be your ancestors, and pictured them standing in Seminary ridge listening to the drums and the cannons and digging deep to follow Marse Lee to hell, or, alternatively never imagined your ancestors looking north and planning an escape and weighing freedom and the unknown against home and the indignity of slavery, or wondering if you can outrun the dogs; I’m sorry you are fundamentally different than the people who’ve been here for generations. You are an immigrant, and we may accept you and love you, but you are not us

There was two years ago and for forty years before that. I also think abortion should be illegal, and I think it should be illegal at the national level. But people definitely feel that they losing a right they had just a few years ago.

It was overturned because it was incorrect.
You can live in any state you choose, find one where you can legally abort all of your 2am mistakes.
