If they were in your unit and responded to this situation they way they did, what would your reaction be?
just asking for a friend.

Serious answer? They would be shunned for the cowards that they are. The worst thing you can do as a Soldier is to lose your sense of honor. Right behind it is integrity. He lost both that day. An abysmal coward.

I would expect that some suicides will come from this.I can't imagine these guys being able to live with the fact they let kids die while they did nothing.
No excuses are good enough.

I see it the same as if a firetruck pulls up to a burning building and they all sit in the truck and watch it burn rather than get out and attempt to save lives.

The betrayal by these officers, for those students, should be felt and voiced by the media, but is silent.

They would be relentlessly punked-out of the unit. 24/7/365 chastisement until they broke, one way or the other.
I've seen it happen. The troop eventually had to be put under protection for his own safety until he was rifted from the unit ... and he was actually a nice guy IMHO. He just couldn't be counted-on so he could not be allowed to stay.

I would charge them with violation of article 99 of the UCMJ and any lesser violations therein.

if a life or death situation happened on a ship, any individual not involved in saving the ship and shipmates would be berated to the point of eventual suicide

Let’s hope so.

Wall to wall counseling followed by court martial.

Damn straight. If that would have happened in my platoon in Nam, they wouldn't have to worry about "Charlie" but there would be serious odds against them coming out of the Bush unscathed.
