You heard wrong, they have been opening up for the last few weeks. Zero covid is done.

The problem they have is that they used super restrictions and limited public meetings, etc during their lockdowns, which lasted much longer than just about anywhere else in the world. This lockdown prevented the usual "herd immunity" that develops as disease works its way thru the population and systematically mutates.
On top of this they used their own vaccine, which many have said was not only useless but was flawed and rushed into development.
They also failed to bolster their resources in the hospitals and clinics. they are short respirators, ventilators and PPE.
Combine that with a population overgrowth, a failing economy and disgruntled populace and you have the making of a true national disaster.

All of the Covid lockdowns over there started about the same time as the Hong Kong protests were getting ramped up.

According to their gov they aren’t.

Zhejiang Province China population is 57 million. Since Covid started they have had 6,235 cases and 0 deaths.
(As reported by the Chinese CDC)

Baton Rouge population is 756,000. Since Covid has started they have had 135,000 cases and 1,403 deaths.
(As reported by The NY Times)
