How did half the pooulation become so crazy?

There have always been folks on the fringe, but they were the overwhelming minority and were appropriately ignored.
But now we have an entire party who support extreme leftist policies - many against their own best interests - just because ‘conservatives are meanies’. An entire party of emotion, discontent, and irrational thought who will stop at nothing to get what they want...even though they don’t really know WHAT they want except the opposite of any conservative viewpoint.
How did we get here, and do we ever go back?

The media stirring shite up for ratings and the degradation of culture over the decades... where it became more acceptable and easy to engage and stir up drama (social media and reality shows).

Have you ever tried to debate a Democrat on literally any policy issue? It’s a f’ing terrible regurgitation of CNN highlights without any substance whatsoever. Yet they maintain their position regardless which is pretty amazing.
