"Senators already advocate for their state under the current system. What's the benefit of returning their selection to state legislatures?"
Georgia Senators, Ossoff, and Warnock, both took 90% of their campaign contributions, from out of state. (searchable fact) Mainly from California. How do you expect them to represent Georgia, if they have to answer to their California masters?

And that made sense when states were more independent entities from the federal government.
Did I miss something? The States never surrendered their sovereignty to a more powerful central government. We have been made to believe through propaganda that the Fed Gov sits atop all of the States, but that isn't true. We are 50 independent States together in a Federation for what is supposed to be limited, granted powers to said Federation.
The War for Southern Independence
Federal Income Taxes
14th Amendment
17th Amendment
Nixon's power move to withhold Fed funding to States if they did not comply with orders from DC
These are the highlights of why and how we are so intertwined with a central power.

I hope it would include a way for States to recall and replace their Senators.

Agreed that prior landmark legislation historically has been Progressive. This time it's different: This is a reaction to and awakening from a century of Progressive distortion of the original Constitution. Check out Convention of States.

When senators are selected by the legislature, that senator is going to do what the state legislature wants them to do.
What happens when the state legislature can't do this function and the state ends up with no representation in Congress?

What makes you think having the legislature appointing the Senate would change that
A) it would a person beholden to the state government.
B) they can be recalled if they do not follow the guidance of the state government
C) it would not be a person looking for higher office and acting in their own interest alone.
