Bernie & co. can't control homeschoolers, so they cut out this educational group from expanded 529s coverage.

The Democrats view is they want control. They want control over everything, whether it is control over regulating an industry, control over the internet or, in this instance, control in how you educate your students," Cruz said. "The reason the Democrats don't like homeschoolers is if you're spending the time, investing the time at home teaching your kids, they can't mandate what you're teaching them."

He said Democrats believe in centralized control, while Republicans believe parents know what's best for their children.

Shame! Homeschoolers will remember when it's time to vote.

I had homeschooler friends growing up. Good kids but they were annoying. Let them deal.

How fair minded of you!

I take it you haven't dealt with public schooled kids lately.

I don't really have an issue with this.

I am all for the choice to home school. Once that choice is made, I am in favor of the Fed Gov not monkeying around (control OR support- even via tax treatment)

You opted out. You are out. I support you in that.

Private schoolers have opted out also. Yet they are covered!

Interestingly enough, homeschoolers have not been opted out of paying taxes. So they support local schools twice as much as others: by paying taxes to support public schools AND NOT sending the kids there and having money spent on them.

Yeap, fair all around! If this had been any other group, they'd be out marching somewhere. Homeschoolers have better things to do.

Ew Lord no.

J/k. I'm a sponsor for the Stonewall Middle School football squad. I don't really deal with them, but I cut em a $50 check every month in the fall. Nice boys.

He can't control private schoolers either.

Most homeschooling parents aren't qualified to teach and most homeschooled kids end up being socially awkward and weird.

Really?!?! The thread is not about me, so let's please not attempt to change the subject. What if the bill had cut out pink and purple polka dotted students?!?! or rainbow haired students? Let's focus on the issue here and not start with the personal attacks. Thanks!

Oh okay, so based on this anecdotal evidence maybe we should outlaw homeschooling.

Were I an autocrat a lot of things would go away overnight. That would be on the table.

Average cost per student per year for public education is $12,509

Public schools are a rip off.

High cost initially and high cost supporting these poorly educated kids for a lifetime.

Bernie and Co. might have helped you guys out, honestly

the 529 plans will be regulated heavily on what you can spend them on and what you can't

do you want the government telling you what type of curriculum you are allowed to spend your money on?

Thank you, as always, for a thoroughly thought out response.

I take it you have no problem with private schoolers benefitting from expanded 529s. Makes sense, no need for responsibility there.

So homeschoolers can't use a 529 for education expenses. What do education expenses even look like for the typical home school kid?

Agreed. Usually very well mannered kids, but socially awkward as frick. When I think of homeschooled kids, I think of:
