Conservatives tried for decades to have the Bill Buckley style gentlemanly debate on the issues.
Democrats insisted on the politics of personal destruction (mainly because their garbage ideas don't fly).
When your opponent fights dirty, it really leaves you no choice but to match them. Sad.

When youre fighting by the Marquess of Queensberry Rules, and your opponent is using MMA tactics, you have to change your style to match theirs.
Especially with the ignorant voter base who believes anything the media pushes on them.
