They year was 1953. Iran had a communist backed dictator, who attempted to over throw the Shah and his own parliament. The CIA stepped in and cut him off at the knees. BECAUSE he was a communist, leading the nation that sits next door to the recently created state of Israel. It was simply an Allies vs Communist maneuver. Remember the Berlin wall? Same thing

1946 - CIA created
1948 - Israel becomes a nation
1953 - Iran jails communist PM
1955 - Warsaw Pact nations formed
1959 - Castro becomes PM of Cuba
1961 - Bay of Pigs
1962 - USSR missiles to Cuba

So the CIA had 2 options, allow a USSR backed Iran under the PM (similar to what we saw with Castro and East Berlin) or overthrow the PM's coup, and continue relations with a grateful Shah
