Why in the heck were they EVER allowed to roam the halls freely and not wear press badges/credentials?
Heck, you can't even enter 75% of the private offices in the country and do this and we are talking about our national defense here.

I say this as a Broadcast Journo major(no longer in the industry), there isn’t a single thing wrong with the policy changes in Pete’s tweet.
The issue here is the ego of these Journalists are taking a hit. They get this feeling like they’re a higher class of people just because they get to say “with XXX news” after introducing themselves. Press credentials aren’t a badge of honor given out as an award or merit of achievement. They’re nothing more than an employee badge. 1st amendment rights are equal across among all citizens.
