Another friend of mine in Guatemala told me how he was extorted by the cartel. They told him to pay them hundreds of dollars a week. He was a simple delivery driver making regular runs between his hometown and Guatemala City.
A cartel stopped his truck one day and demanded regular payments to them. He declined. They killed his wife within two weeks. He then illegally immigrated to the US to make enough money to pay off the cartel to allow his kids to live. In the end, we believe they killed him anyway around 2016. He was found shot after moving back to Guatemala from the US.
